Iron Roads

Iron Roads is a top-down 2D train management game for Mobile and Desktop with a focus on optimising train networks. Its minimalistic interface is well-suited to setting up sprawling and complex networks, while working well on mobile, and being approachable for new players. We’re aiming for the accessibility of Mini Metro and the depth of games such as OpenTTD and Opus Magnum, while distilling this depth into a mobile friendly format in the way The Battle of Polytopia did.

Description

Iron Roads is available in Early Access on Steam, and as of 12th February 2026, on iOS, tvOS, and macOS.

Features of all versions of Iron Roads

  • Board game-like mechanics Iron Roads has resource tokens rather than money. These can be earned by growing towns or completing contracts, and need to be used strategically to expand networks and progress the game
  • Procedural music Music in Iron Roads is a combination of notes generated from trains and passengers, and authored melodies. The music generated is as unique as the layouts built by players
  • Performance graphs The main goal of Iron Roads is to optimise the train networks, so charts are available to analyse data relating to resources and passengers
  • Play anywhere Iron Road runs on Desktop and Mobile. You can use our save cloud to sync your game between all supported platforms, picking up and playing your game wherever you are

Features of the Apple App Store version of Iron Roads

  • Try before you buy Download free, play for hours, and if you enjoy it you can buy extra content
  • Single purchase You can buyout the entire game, and any future content, with a one time purchase of $8.99, or buy smaller content packs for $1.99 each
  • Universal purchase Any purchase is valid for all three platforms (tvOS, iOS, macOS)
  • iCloud sync Save in iCloud and play the same save game on any device, any platform

Roadmap

This is far from a complete list, but some of the more commonly requested features on our roadmap include:

  • Further content: Iron Roads already has a number of hand-crafted scenarios, timed challenges and an endless mode, but we plan to expand each during Early Access
  • Multiplayer
  • Mod support

Iron Roads will not have:

  • Buses, boats, planes or any other form of transport
  • 3D graphics: our focus is on enabling players to build large networks easily, and we find 2D better for that
  • NFTs, lootboxes, etc

Development Background

Iron Roads is our third game, and unlike our games in the narrative genre, this time round we have tackled the challenge of bringing a deep train simulation to the palm of your hand.

We have worked to evoke the feeling of playing a tabletop game, with a focus on optimising your networks, rather than make a realistic tycoon-type simulation game. We replaced money with boardgame-like tokens and we only award thos tokens for improvements to your network. This has led to a mobile-friendly, easy to understand game, where progress is fueled by clever optimization, not just waiting for a bank balance to grow.

We initially launched on Steam Early Access at the beginning of 2025 to gain feedback on the core game mechanics. Since then we have expanded the game, improved the UI and added an randomly generated game mode. We are very grateful for the feedback that led to these improvements, and now, after a long mobile beta period, we now feel ready to launch on mobile platforms. This isn’t the end of our Early Access for Iron Roads though, we will continue expanding and improving the game for a while yet!
